The Wrap Up: November 3

It’s Monday after hard but also great weekend. And it’s time for another wrap-up.

This time it’s about what the truckloads of information on the web means to our understanding of data quality and what we actually should look for when surfing the web. It’s also about ad rates and about a fondness for old media, even though we often preach the opposite.

Does More Information Mean Less Quality

This one got me thinking about whether we should look at changing perspectives on how we use online? Instead of thinking that it’s a source of absolute knowledge, maybe we should think about it as a source for implicit knowledge through the connections which finding potential sources might disclose? That people are the ones that matter - not the massive amounts of data being added each day? Just a thought.

Ad Rates Dropped 11% In The Third Quarter

This is exactly the thing that happens when panic strikes companies relying 100 % on advertising revenue: When clients decide to reduce their budgets, everybody go hunting for that elusive ad revenue using lower price as bait. It’s so, so stupid. Because it will most likely never be possible to raise rates again, and the ones going below the floor on asking price only help reinforce the disaster. Such people have no place in sales.

Turn Your Favorite Blogs Into a Personal Magazine

Now this is an idea, I had long time ago. I even discussed it with a business contact who is deep into virtual publishing about whether it would make sense to do. The idea stranded on that. And maybe it was all for the best. Because the more I think about it, the more I find it funny that all the while, we’re busy burying print, we still try to do new stuff that reflects the way old media works.
