The Wrap Up: November 18

It’s Tuesday and it’s time for another wrap up of interesting posts. I realize it has been a while since last time, but that’s what happens when time starts flying.

This time around it’s about calculating cost-per-acquisition, Facebook and personal ads plus a sad sad story from real life social media. Enjoy!

How to Calculate Cost-Per-Acquisition…

Andrew Chen has a really good post on how to calculate how much a user is worth to you, if you’re a start up and trying to get some traction for your service. How much should you pay? And where should you be looking to recruit the users? It’s basic ABC for customer acquisition, but my gut feeling tells me that quite a lot skip this part. That’s stupid. Or worse: It’s the sure way to bankruptcy.

Shut Up - You’re Helping the Customer!

Chris Brogan tells the tale about ‘Bob’ who got involved in social media on behalf of the company, he works for - and who nearly got fired for it. I’m in no doubt at all that this is a true case story, and that there are a lot of other Bob’s out there. It’s just painful how unaware many businesses are of how the rules of the game are changing. Companies with this kind of behaviour towards customers and especially employees seriously deserve to go out of business ASAP.

Facebook Not Interested In Lucrative Personal Ads

A rumour has been circulating that Facebook was testing out personal ads in a way that would enable users to put an ad up the themselves, be seen by others and mayby find new friends etc. that way. However, on Silicon Alley Insider they rebuf this rumour. Personally, I’m a little torn here. I think it could be a brillant business for Facebook - and a brillant business they’ll soon enough need. On the other hand it may be putting a lot of people off, if suddenly Facebook became synonymous with dating.
