Mobile web could take off - offline
“The mobile web is going to be the next big thing!”. I can’t count how many times I have heard someone say something like that. It’s like a religion being vigorously preached. But also a religion increasingly preached towards the already converted.
Why? Because its still too hard for many. The devices and setup procedures are still too hard for non-techies, and the pricing can be an absolute wilderness stopping many from trying it out. And these two reasons may be excactly why taking the mobile web for a spin offline might be a great idea.
According to Springwise, Chinese start-up Duo Guo is taking mobile content to in-store kiosks. Managed by a real person, customers can try content and services out, get advice and get help downloading and installing it. The human factor in the form of the personal service is what’s going to swing it for the potential customers.
I think the idea is great, and I’m wondering if something similar could work in the Western world? To me a mobile phone is a very social object, so it would make sense to make the discovery and purchasing of content a more social - and perhaps even personal - experience. At the same time it would be a great opportunity to reassure people of what is actually up and down in the world of mobile internet, services and costs associated.
