Get your very own Twitter - free
First it was social networks followed by video services and microblogging services. Now it’s aggregators such as FriendFeed. All flavors of the day of which many doesn’t really stand out.
As such Identi.ca as a microblogging service doesn’t stand out versus fx Twitter. But it’s distributed model does.
The service is based on a microblogging platform called Laconica, which is released under an open source license. This effectively means that you can download the code, install it on your own server and create your own microblogging service.
Brian Solis of PR 2.0 have some great ideas on how this could be utilized in a distributed form, and I agree completely. Put together the right way, services such as Identi.ca may be what’s needed to make microblogging more useful for the masses and thus secure it’s really broad adoption.
