What privacy?

One of the things I don’t think we can discuss too often, when we talk about the revolutionary development of the web and the services it has to offer us, is privacy. Yes, it’s being discussed at an intellectual level, but somehow I don’t think the severity of the issue has really resonated with people.

What I find is that if you have a first name and an employer, today it takes about 2 seconds to find someone in Google with surname and all. After that it takes another 2 seconds to find every single public trace that person has ever set in the web through a search in fx Google. It’s somewhat scary.

Sarah Perez from ReadWriteWeb has done a brillant piece on the end of anonymity. And while I still personally think that the benefits outweigh the drawbacks of online participation, there is much to think about for each and every one of us.

It’s your life, damn it!
