My wishes for the perfect mobile device
A lot have been said about Apple’s iPhone, and some of the other platform vendors are making plans to offer their own versions of the app store.
It’s all great. But what about taking it one step further and look at what the ideal combo would be for a mobile device targeted towards the consumer (who may in fact also need her phone in relation to her job)?
My first wish would be a phone that was really skinny when it comes to preloaded software. Yes, I would want the mobile device to be equipped with camera, wi-fi, 3G (until something better comes along), GPS and the usual things common today, but I would want to choose my software for myself.
I would want all the features to be in an app store and not pre-installed on the phone. If I want the phone to function as a video camera, I will download an application for video recording and so forth. The features are in the software - not the hardware.
My second wish would be for all the sync’ing to work flawlessly over the air - ideally with functionality/applications as a service in the cloud, so I can have an ultra thin device that has all the functions I need by the click of a button, when I need them. Otherwise not. Payment wise I would one basic choice: The odd one-off pricing and then a great subscription plan. I don’t mind paying for functionality as long as it makes sense to me.
My third wish would be for sensible data plans. Because I do mind paying too much for what’s essentially a commodity product. It’s starting to get better, but we’re not there yet. Telco’s should understand that allowing me to spend a lot of data for a lower price compared to restricting my use by demanding a higher price makes me a more happy customer. A customer unlikely to churn and who may in fact hold the carrier so dear that upsells were possible.
