Customers, customers, customers

Andrew Chen has a good post asking what we - you and I - call the people, who come to our website? Do we call them users, customers or the audience? Because depending on what we call them, we are in different mindsets trying to serve their needs, make them happy and stick to our websites, content or services.

I find the question quite interesting. But I do think that three are two too many. To me there is only one group: The customer

If you view the people you serve as customers it means being focused on having your best mutual interests at heart. You want to serve them, so they tell their friends about how cool and/or useful your offerings are. You want to build on the relationship for the longer term. You want to listen in on suggestions on how to improve your product or your service.

It’s a more even relationship. And it has the biggest potential both short and long term. So if you need to focus on just one of Andrews three groups, focus on the customer.
