A viral disease

It seems like it has been slowing down a bit, but there is still way too much talk about viral marketing. About marketing messages, which are designed to trick people into buying something, being spun into different communities in the vain hope that people will think it’s funny or cool.

I admit that sometimes viral ads are indeed funny. But I still think there is something unhealthy about them. Maybe it’s just because I’m most fond of things I find meaningful? And so few viral ads are to me.

Or maybe it’s the term. The more I think about it, the more I think I agree with Boris from The Next Web:

I never liked the term Viral Marketing. It just sounds like bad karma. Viruses are associated with diseases and death. Do you want to associate your product or service with that?

I certainly wouldn’t.
