Searching for a one night stand

I must confess that I really have a hard time understanding what Yahoo! hopes to gain from it’s much debated search deal with Google. I guess I just don’t understand when a player that is currently a secure number two in the market place wants to join forces with number one and thus reduce choice.

Of course you could say that it could be seen as Yahoo!’s own admission that their role in search is on the decline anyway, and that they just want to cash in while they can. But if that is the case, then I think it’s going to be a brutal one night stand seen from Yahoo!’s perspective. [Read more →]

Embracing crisis

If you are somehow engaged in new medie ventures, it is obvious asking yourself how the deep worldwide financial crisis is going to affect you, your company and the service(s), you provide.

Make no mistake about it: I think a lot of the smaller companies with a business model based on consumer advertising revenues are fucked. But for the ones who really sit down and pan out a more worthwhile and sustainable approach, I think there is amble opportunity. [Read more →]

Thoughts on mobile social networking

I remember about 5-6 years ago when mobile SMS premium services started out. There was no limit to the potential, and people setting up gateways were already spending the gold they had yet to collect from charging hapless mobile users endless amounts of micro-amounts for logos, ringtones, jokes etc.

People-driven niches

Yesterday we had a very inspiring about niches in FDIH’s knowledgesharing group for media and content, which I have the pleasure of chairing. We were almost 20 people from various companies, who spent a couple of hours at TV 2 in Copenhagen discussing niches, definitions of same and all sorts of issues in that context.

The meeting made me think quite a lot about what it would take for a company to succesfully claim a niche today and at the same time do it in a way that makes it hard for others to compete. The best answer I can come up with is simple really: People. [Read more →]

Uniqueness vs ease of use

A new survey from the Media Management Center at Northwestern University focuses in on the importance of being among a users top three to five choices for a given subject in order not to be overlooked and forgotten about.

The falldown of that survey is interesting. Because it focuses on a schisma: Should you bet on ease-of-use or being unique? [Read more →]
