Why social media matters

It’s ever so funny to see how companies, consultants and media agencies all advocate social media as just another platform to get a marketing message out. Personally I can’t think of something much more narrowminded than that.

Why? Because social media is so much more. It’s the embodiment of how the internet has become a ubiquitous utility just like water, electricity, gas and so on. And it should be treated with the appropriate respect.

So what does this entail. It entails really focusing on what it is that makes social media different than any other media channel. David Armano uses a personal experience with customer service at Comcast to nail it pretty well:

…the real opportunity for organizations looking to figure out how to tap the power of the social movement lies on the experience side more so than the marketing.

It’s not about the message you can send out through yet another channel. It’s not about getting people to go viral with that message. No, it is all about building connections, authenticity and serving happy customers.

You should be happy about it, too. Because happy customers are just about the best marketing, you can ever get.

It’s about creating a good brand experience. It’s about engaging and creating conversation beyond the advertising…

…and doing so in a meaningful way, I would argue. If the meaning isn’t there and provides something above and beyond the messaging, what’s the real point?
