New Media of the Year

Normally I am not that much into award shows, but when the invitation says its time to decide on ‘New Media of the Year’ at the Danish New Media Days conference I glance at the nominees in the hope of seeing something there, which I think is truly worthwhile acknowledging.

And each year I’m slightly disappointed. Because I don’t see that one thing among the nominees that have both a very broad appeal and is truly meaningful. So how does it look this year?

Well, it’s not really any different. There are seven nominees for the award. Two are not Danish (Dopplr and Blyk), once is not a media entity (Google’s V8 engine in their Chrome browser), and one is really just an archive function (DR’s Bonanza). That leaves three contenders.

One of these is Carlsberg’s Partofthegame.tv - a brandchannel universe meant for football fans but without any real uptake in the market due to a complete misunderstood underlying concept, IMHO. So no thanks to that.

That leaves MyC4 and Momondo.

Momondo is a great search engine for plane tickets. No doubt about that. I use it all the time when looking for the cheapest plane tickets to places, I want to go. Highly useful on a personal level but not really making that broader “dent in the universe” thats such a driver to Apple’s CEO, Steve Jobs.

A dent is what MyC4 makes by providing every person with access to a computer a chance to microfund start ups in the developing part of the world. This is a great way of securing worthwhile aid and assistance to people, who are looking to take charge of their own destinies in parts of the world, where there seem to be nothing but challenges. It’s really meaningful like few other things, and to me it puts a lot of things in perspective.

I have no doubt that should I pick a winner, it should be MyC4.

Guess these nominees just underline the fact that this conference is more about marketing than media, at least IMO.

Perhaps. I would add to that that it also shows me that either we in Denmark have an innovation problem, when it comes to new media, or that the innovation that takes place doesn’t hit with mainstream audiences. I really find it hard to accept that we are so lame as the nominees IMHO suggest.

MyC4 is absolutely not a media. Its a great cause though.

The only ‘media’ here is Blyk actually.

Not sure that being Danish is a requirement for the award - if it is, your comment ruling out non-Danish entrants is fine - if not, then…

I guess it depends on how you define ‘media’. If you define it as something that is supported by advertising, I guess you’re right. However, I would more define it as a platform for communication, distribution and exchange around a given (set of) subject(s). As for the requirements I am fine with non-Danish entransts. I just think its sad that the Danish industry doesn’t have more to show for itself in a setting like this. It would be cool if there was a plethora of Danish sites and services to choose from as I think it would send a great signal internally within the Danish industry. That’s all.

Mads & Lars (and everyone else), you are hereby nominated as NewMediaSpotters leading up to New Media Days 2009. We’re looking very much forward to your suggestions at http://newmediadays.dk/sw3613.asp/ Seriously!

I’m totally rooting for MyC4 - I have personally invested several hundred euros of my very limited personal funds already! I love the project, media or not!

…adjusting the link posted previously: http://newmediadays.dk/sw3613.asp - The page where anyone can suggest nominees for the New Media of the Year award. Too late for 2008, I’m afraid, but next year is another conference.
