Bringing back the meaning
The web is filled with crappy content and useless applications. It’s a garbage dumb it would take a lot more than Wall*E to clean, even if it got hundreds of years to get the job done. There’s just too little meaning.
There’s too little of the stuff that really matters to real people. Too few applications that truly make a difference. But luckily there are some things out there which are pointing in the right direction. And those deserve to be mentioned.
One of them is SeeFixClick. It’s basically a service that allows ordinary citizens to open a ticket on any given thing they observe in their local neighborhoods, and which they want to make their local government aware of. It may be thrash thrown in the street, broken tiles on the pavement or whatever. Point is that it is a way for engaged citizens to bring matters to the governments attention.
I like the concept because it has meaning. It’s easy to decipher what this is actually about. I report. You fix. End of story. We can spot the change - or lack of same. It isn’t some meta thing that’s not making a real, tangible, physical difference. It’s very real.
I honestly don’t understand why there aren’t many more people working on creating meaningful applications for everyday use by potentially everybody? Is it a business decision, because everyone seems to be living under the illusion that the only viable business model is advertising and thus decide to go the easy entertainment route? Or is it because the people who should be developing these applications simply just don’t care?
Whatever the explanation I think this is an area with huge potential, where people should really be looking. It’s underdeveloped, underserved in every way. I think it’s also a profitable area. And at the very least you get to provide something meaningful for people. And that’s not bad in itself.
