Mobile social networking to get big?

Time and time again I find myself spending a few minutes on the mobile version of Facebook checking the latest updates from my 200+ friends on the service. I actually think its fun, and I have to admit that it’s one of the services that have opened my eyes towards the mobile web.

As a consequence of that I have also turned more positive on the potential of social networking via mobile devices. But, frankly, not because of Facebook as such.

The reason why I have gone soft on this and actually think it could be quite useful is because of the potential of easy integration with your address book on your mobile device. If you’re anything like me, there’s a reasonable chance that the contacts in your mobile are the ones that really matter the most to you - all the acquaintances and more loose connections are left out. And this in itself is enough reason for the mobile device to be a powerful social networking tool.

Does this mean that mobile social networking advertising has a big future? I’m not so sure, because people tend to be more vary about advertising on their mobile devices, since these are both personal and practically the only place, where advertising has yet to invade their lives. And I think it’s important not to get confused by the success of mobile operators, who give away phones and minutes in exchance for advertising opt-ins. These offers, such as Blyk, are only attractive to a special group of people anyway.

In summary, mobile social networking is a great opportunity if approached in the right way. It can easily be completely screwed over, and chances are that it will. Let’s just hope that the potential doesn’t vaporize in the process.

Agree, mobile social networking is on the rise, but it’s a long way from reaching its full potential. I have gone through a couple of mobile social networks out there and they are nowhere near my expectations. So I decided to list down a few scenarios.

I like your points, but don’t you think that in time there will be no client software but only a service that resides in the cloud, integrates with your SIM contacts and which you then use straight from a browser?

You take the cake on this one.

I guess initiatives like Android will enable such integration.
With 3G connectivity (awesome response time) and AJAX enabled desktop class browsers (near native app experience) there would be no reason to build client software.
