Is Google Ad Manager a great idea?
Google Ad Manager is moving out of beta. Now everybody with an AdSense account can manage their own ads, setup filters etc. etc. It’s all very flashy.
But is it really a great idea for Google to be entering this space? I think it depends on your perspective.
On face value it actually makes a lot of sense. People like Ross Dawson have long been arguing that Google is in effect an aggregator of ads, and if that is the position, we’re going to take, Google Ad Center is just a next logical step.
At the same time however, it seems like Google is expanding to broadly. Yes, they may be launching new tools in the advertising space, but they are starting to experience some issues getting traction for them. People’s habbits are hard to kick. Especially when you’re dealing with professionals. And maybe - just maybe - there’s a growing understanding in the advertiser community that Google’s dominance should be countered. Soon.
Seen in that light the launch of Google Ad Manager may not be such a great idea. The last thing Google would want would be for such a move to be counter productive.
